In 1902, the Scottish whaling barque Nova Zembla sank off the coast of Baffin Island. It was forgotten for 117 years. In August 2018, researchers spotted its wreckage from a drone, and in 2019 they returned for a full survey - scattered along the beach, untouched, as if time had stopped. Nova Zembla was built in 1873 in Bremerhaven, at the Wencke shipyard. It was a steam screw barque with a wooden hull - a typical representative of the Dundee whaling fleet.
